At 1085m Mt Snowdon, the tallest mountain in Wales is a day hike to tick off your bucket list. There are 6 or so ways to get up this mountain they are.
* Watkin Path
* Llanberis Path
* Pyg Track
* Miners’ Track
* Snowdon Ranger Path
* Beddegelert Path/Rhyd Ddu
Llanberis Path is the most popular track as it has the least climbing (but is longer), and if you want a challenge try the Wakin Path. If you are scared of heights i would sick to the easier routes. For more information on all the routes see this site
The Rhyd Ddu Path
We made our way to the summit via th Rhyd Ddu path. This is said to be one of the quiter tracks (and easier) on the mountain. Its just over 6km each way (3.75miles) it took us about 3.5 hours to complete. With an assent of 890 m it can take anywhere from 3-7 hours depending on fitness.
The first section of the walk is a nice easy uphill over farmland its exactly how i imagined walking in the welsh county side to be, even a spot of rain. Further up the track if the weather is clear you get stunning views of the valley below. The track is easy to follow and well worn in so you won’t get lost.
Further up the mountain you see the ridge of the basin you follow to the summit. Overlooking the basin it provides some spactaulair views of the countryside. It can feel at times that you are walking feet away from a 1000ft drop so a head for heights is a must. You follow the ridge line of the basin until you reach the summit. once you reach the cafe you walk up the steps and you will see the summit marker and at that point you will be the highest (by altitude) person in wales which is pretty awesome
When you stop walking you get cold quick. Thankfully there is a cafe where you can warm yourself and maybe even reward yourself for making it to the top.
During our walk we had clear weather and then the next minute low cloud, so make sure you take your photos every opportunity you get. And don’t forget to bring wet weather gear.
Where to Stay
The night before our walk we stayed at the Llyn Gwynant Campsite. It overlooks the lake but it can be pretty exposed at times, which means cold. But there are fire rings and you can buy firewood to make it a bit more pleasant. There is nothing like waking up and eating breakfast with a clear view of the mountain you are about to climb.
After the Climb make sure to head to one of the local pubs a pint or mulled wine, as if its a cold day they are always sure to have the fire roaring.
Other things to do in the area
A few hours away in Landdundo is the Great Orme walk around the costal headland. It can be walked around in a morning. Or if the adrenaline rush of the worlds fastest zip line is more your thing have a look at Zip World (https://www.zipworld.co.uk/adventure/detail/velocity).
